Bottlenose dolphins are common in the Sounds and love to ride our bow wave!

28th December 2011

(Bottlenose Dolphins, Hector's Dolphins, Dusky Dolphin, Orca & Fur Seals)

Summer is here with lots of grorgeous sunny days and flat calm conditions here in the sheltered waters of the tranquil Malborough sounds

The schools of baitfish swimming into the inner sounds are still attracting both the seabirds and the marine mammals . We've had Common dolphins , Dusky dolphins , Bottlenose Dolphins , Orca ( Dolphins ) and Hectors Dolphins all in the last week!

Orca were here last week swimming close in to Picton town beach. Fantasic encounter we had with these kings of the sea, Hectors have been giving us some great viewing, theres been 2 different pods of Dusky dolphins and pods of up to 45 Bottlenose have been moving through the area. The bottlenose of which there are only less than 1000 in NZ have been giving us some fantasic swims.

We have been interacting with this pod of animals to build trust with them and now they have repaid us with an amazing swim with very close encounters of these up to 750kg and 4m long dolphin.

Thats not all though! We've also seen plenty of NZ fur seals, Australasian Gannets, Fluttering Shearwaters in abundance, and lots of King Shag. As close as 15 minutes away!

The Bird Sanctuary Island is also full of life at the moment and we have just had some Rowi Kiwi removed from the island to be released back into their wild and original home on the west coast of the South Island. The south island saddleback have been out in force and our resident falcon has been spotted.

All in all its a fantastic time of year to be out cruising in the sunny, sheltered waters of the beautiful Queen Charlotte Sounds!!

Amazing views of Orca on our Motuara Island Ecotour!
